Removal Van Brent Health and Safety Policy
Removal Van Brent is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and transport activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with household and commercial removals, packing, loading, transportation and unloading.
We aim to conduct all work in a manner that prevents injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm, while delivering efficient and professional moving services across our service area.
Policy Aims and Responsibilities
The overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the management of Removal Van Brent. Management is responsible for ensuring that appropriate resources, systems and training are provided so that this policy can be effectively implemented and maintained.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day enforcement of safe working practices on each job, including monitoring staff behaviour, checking equipment and raising any concerns promptly.
All employees, whether permanent or temporary, share responsibility for their own health and safety and for the safety of others who may be affected by their actions. Every worker is expected to follow company procedures, report hazards and cooperate fully with health and safety instructions.
Legal Compliance and Continuous Improvement
Removal Van Brent complies with all applicable health and safety legislation and codes of practice relevant to our operations. We will monitor changes in legal requirements and industry best practice to keep this policy up to date.
We are committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. This includes reviewing incidents and near-misses, consulting staff, learning from experience and updating procedures and training as necessary.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Risk assessments are carried out for our typical removal activities, including packing, lifting, carrying, loading, unloading, driving and working at clients premises. Where a job presents unusual or higher risks, a specific assessment will be undertaken before work starts.
Control measures identified through risk assessments are built into our safe systems of work. These include planning vehicle access, identifying safe routes for carrying items, using correct lifting techniques and using handling aids where appropriate.
All employees must follow the safe systems of work provided. Any task that appears unsafe should be stopped and reported to a supervisor immediately.
Manual Handling and Lifting Practices
Manual handling is a key risk in removal work. Removal Van Brent provides training and guidance on safe lifting and carrying techniques to minimise the risk of back injuries, strains and sprains.
Staff are instructed to assess the load and route before lifting, work in teams for heavy or awkward items, use proper posture and avoid twisting or over-reaching. Where possible, mechanical aids such as trolleys, dollies and ramps are used to reduce manual effort.
No employee is required to lift or carry any load that they consider to be unsafe. Concerns must be raised with a supervisor so that an alternative method can be arranged.
Vehicle and Driving Safety
Our vehicles are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition, with regular checks and servicing carried out in line with manufacturer recommendations and legal requirements. Drivers must carry out basic pre-use checks before each journey and report any defects immediately.
All drivers must hold the appropriate licence and follow all road traffic laws, speed limits and parking regulations. Safe loading practices are used to ensure that loads are secure, evenly distributed and within permitted weight limits.
Drivers are expected to drive considerately and to allow sufficient time for journeys, taking into account traffic conditions. Mobile phones or other devices must not be used while driving unless allowed by law and used in a safe, hands-free manner.
Protection of Customers and the Public
We take reasonable steps to protect customers, their property and members of the public during removal operations. This includes planning access routes, keeping pathways clear, placing warning signs or cones where necessary and keeping doors, gates and lifts under control while in use.
Where work is carried out in shared spaces, such as communal hallways, stairwells or public areas, staff must take particular care to avoid trip hazards, falling objects and blocked exits.
Use of Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
Only trained employees may operate company equipment, including tail lifts and handling aids. Equipment must be used in accordance with training and manufacturer instructions.
Personal protective equipment, such as safety footwear, gloves or high-visibility clothing, is provided where required by risk assessments. Employees are responsible for wearing and caring for any items issued to them and for reporting damage or loss so that replacements can be provided.
Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work
Employees must present themselves fit for work, free from the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or any substance that could impair their judgement or performance. Any prescribed medication that may affect safe working must be disclosed to a manager so that suitable adjustments can be considered.
We encourage open communication about health or fitness issues that may affect the ability to perform removal tasks safely. Where appropriate, work will be adjusted or alternative duties arranged.
Training, Information and Supervision
Removal Van Brent provides appropriate induction and ongoing training for all staff. This includes instruction on manual handling, vehicle safety, use of equipment, emergency procedures and site-specific risks.
Information on health and safety responsibilities and procedures is communicated through briefings, job instructions and supervision. New or inexperienced workers are closely supervised until they demonstrate competent and safe performance.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near-misses and hazardous situations must be reported to a supervisor as soon as possible. This allows any immediate risks to be controlled and ensures that details are recorded for investigation.
Emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of fire, injury, traffic collision or property damage, are explained to employees. Staff must follow these procedures and cooperate with emergency services if required.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, legal requirements or identified risks. Updated versions are communicated to all employees so that everyone understands their responsibilities in maintaining a safe working environment for removal activities.
